I must be getting lazy, as I didn’t ski again today. Rather I had a sleep in, and was a couch potato all day. Looking out the window, I have watched it snow all day (although very lightly – only a few cms accumulation). So, I am keen to ski tomorrow and see what its like up there – probably pretty good.

I have just been looking at a few various forecasts, and there isn’t much good news to talk about, with mostly dry, sunny weather expected. Hopefully they are wrong, and we get some of the snow that is LONG overdue….

During my ‘internet surfing’ I came across a great deal on a set of skis. I personally ski the Rossignol Z9 176cms (my carving skis that are still good off-piste, 176cms is the longest they make and perfect for my 6ft height) and have had a blast on them this season. I also have some K2 Public Enemy’s which I use a lot (mainly rock skis, but good all rounders) , and a pair of Prior Originals for the powder days (and my general skis during a normal season). Anyway, I have come across a website selling the Rossignol Z11 including bindings (the model better than mine – so for advanced to expert skiers as they are pretty stiff) for US$480 including shipping in the US (savings of US$770 from retail). That is a really good deal, I bought mine on a ‘pro’ deal and paid more than that. They also have other skis for sale – such as Rossignol B83 for $480 (saving $520) and K2 Apache Crossfire for $500 (saving $700). So if you are considering purchasing new skis this season, then check out that site (especially in the US with free shipping).

Anyway, time to sit back and watch the rest of the Super Bowl. Since Arizona are the underdogs, I will cheer for them !!

I can’t believe that you didn’t ski on the first day with fresh snow in a little while.

  2. I ended up in Squamish over night and didn’t make it back until around midday. I will let it snow and pick up the powder in the morning :)

Hey Greg. Today was pretty good up high. Decent amounts of fresh snow in Harmony/Symphony. The middle third of blackcomb though is still pretty nasty. A patroller I rode up with described it as a thin coating of white paing on 100 year old siding. Pretty accurate. We took the P2P back over from Whistler towards the end of the day and skied some runs off 7th. We took a final run down the front and the conditions around Solar Coaster were bordering on East Coast hardpack (I’m from there and ski it all the time). It was truely nasty, piles of fluff interspresed with bulletproof ice. That being said the upper part of the mountain seems to be shaping up and I had some truely good runs through the glades on Whistler.

Looks like a big dump is due this weekend (I know they all say it on the forecast). Does anyone have any info on this?

  5. Thanks for the report Chris !
Sounds like the upper is nice, but the mid to lower is ‘dust on crust’ with the crust being a nasty hard packed/ice layer.
I am looking forward to skiing the glacier again tomorrow – it is still snowing lightly. I just walked the dog and there is a good 5cm or so on the ground now.

The goods on Blackcomb were definitely on the the Glaciers today. We were bummed to see 1-2cm on the Sunday morning forecast but happy to see much more on the mountain. We found boot-deep+ powder in the top part of Blackcomb Glacier and skier’s left of the Horstman T-bar…even got a few waist-high shots here and there in the windblown areas. We ended up lapping the glaciers most of the day. Spanky’s was open but we didn’t see ,uch that looked worth hitting.

Coverage on the off-piste still leaves a lot to be desired, BUT there are pretty good conditions to be found if you explore a little bit and avoid the usual groomers that get all the traffic.

  7. No idea about the snow being predicted for the weekend – I sure do hope so.
To top it off, I am hearing about the Canadian prairies being buried in snow – even the UK is getting snow !!

  8. Phil, sounds like what I would’ve guessed…. and why I am heading to the glacier first thing tomorrow morning :)
    Thanks for the report !

Well i made it to whistler and did a couple of runs today only on the fitzimmons chair as i was feeling a little under the weather. Now i thought the conditions were fantastic compared to what i am used to home in NZ. Cant wait to get up the top tomorrow and see what its like. Greg- would be great to meet you and buy you a beer (no im not here for gay week hahaha)

Thanks for the great reports boys – very useful. Coming over on the 15 Feb and never been to Whistler before. Only boarded in Aus. Even with the sub-par season to date (interm rider), will the slopes still be awesome!

  11. Simon, stay away from the lower mountain. Like I have said a few times already, I am comparing Whistler to how it ‘can’ be – not to other resorts. Even on a bad day Whistler is better than a lot of other places :)
I have no plans to go out this week, but could be persuaded to watch a Canucks ice hockey game at the Cinnamon Bear Tuesday at 7pm – let me know if you are keen.

My only real complaint is the lack of snow (base) so there are a lot more rocks to dodge than normal.

Lorence, I am sure you will find some runs here that you like, and lets hope you get a powder day or two !!
