Olympic Fever is Building

With the Olympics around 65 days away, excitement is starting to build up. Even some of the people who were ‘so-so’ are now starting to look forward to them. After all the inconveniences we have had to go through, such as the highway upgrade and the developments of green parcels of land, we are finally going to experience a once-in-a-lifetime global event. I am a huge sports fanatic and have watched every Olympics (both Summer and Winter) on TV since I can remember, getting to watch some of these events live is going to be a thrill. Who knows, I might even get to help someone celebrate a medal by downing a few beers at a local pub :)

I managed to get tickets to a few events, which were delivered today, and hope to watch some Canadian athletes bring home the gold (especially Whistler local Britt Janyk). I also managed to get tickets to the medal ceremony’s for both the Downhill races – so that should be cool too.

There are certainly issues regarding transportation and parking (amongst other things I’m sure), but hopefully everything works out, and we have one hell of a party!

I received an email from Scott, who showed me an article regarding how the 2002 Winter Olympics affected Salt Lake City and other ski resorts in the state of Utah, USA. The main idea is how the Olympics increased skier numbers, spurred development of the resorts and helped the local economy grow. Obviously WB would like some positive PR out of this event, to help bring new visitors to the area. I am not sure it is needed, as Whistler is already well known to the international ski market (unlike Salt Lake City at the time) – I do think it will help bring more tourists overall, mostly sight-seers and summer holidaymakers though.

Whistler is a truly remarkable piece of nature, and well worth a visit – any time of year. I’m sure you will see on TV some segments regarding the golfing, mountain biking, hiking and ‘hanging out at the lake/s’ that takes place here during the summers.
