Thanks to Sarah for today’s report. Can’t wait until I can start doing some again :

The official line on overnight / 24 hour snow was 3cms but in places it felt like much more but you had to stay high – the glacier around the Showcase and Horstman t-bars on Blackcomb were in great shape with powder on top of smooth but a little crunchy layer underneath. We also skied the Couloir Extreme which had deep powder in places but with a very firm, chunky layer below. You had to be careful. The groomers most everywhere were in great shape but better to stick to the ones that got sun – we skied Rock n Roll a couple of times and it was great, but you could see (and hear) that runs in the shade were harder and more icy.

It was warm and sunny, so we had drinks on the sun-drenched deck at Glacier Lodge and were inspired to end the day on the patio at Merlins. Skiing there we found the lower mountain to be soft and slushy but with a firm base: “hero snow” – easy to carve and hold your edge.

Overall: variable to good.

:)

Planning on going to Whistler first week of April.
Do you think it’s worth it or looking at the season and current conditions, it’s going to get worse and worse ?

    Thks a lot !

Hard to say, the weather has certainly been warm for this time of year. The current forecast looks like it is staying that way too.

There is also a lot of precipitation in the short term forecast, and March -> April is generally a very wet time of year. So, it looks like we will be getting a lot more rain in the valley and an early start to the biking season.

That being said, the alpine is high enough that it will (and has been) get snow rather than rain. There will be good skiing up top for a while to come imo.

As for the season getting ‘worse and worse’ – I would have to say that this season is far from a bad one. We have plenty of snow, and history shows we will get quite a bit more before it is over.

It is funny how people get the wrong idea from the media. I am presuming you think the season is bad because of the TV coverage of the Olympics. If the Olympics had been held last year, the world would have seen PERFECT conditions for them (both here and Cypress Mt). Cold and sunny, but you would not have seen the average conditions up top with the sparse snow cover. This year the alpine is completely filled in – and that is where most people spend there time (not in the valley where the races were held so spectators could see them)

Ask anyone who lives or skis here, and I am 99% sure they will tell you this season is WAY better than last years.

I actually agree. The image we have from WB is the one broadcast by the guys on TV and the whole story of having to bring snow for the downhill race.
Glad to see it’s actually not the case !

        Thks Greg for the info.
        Good job with the blog

          No problems Codax,

Just to clear one thing up – they DIDN’T bring any snow in to Whistler for any events.

Cypress mountain (near Vancouver, about 1.5-2 hours drive away) needed to have snow brought in.
