All I can say is OMG! Ullr is dumping snow on us right now.

Today, a Whistler Blackcomb press release said we are 54cm away from breaking the all time ‘Snowfall in November’ record (416cm). There is a good chance that record will be broken by tomorrow! We have already had around 30cm tonight and it doesn’t look like it is about to stop anytime soon :) Tomorrow is going to be amazing.

The press release also announced that the Creekside Gondola and Garbanzo Express will both be opening this Saturday, no mention of the rumored Harmony chair. Judging by this next paragraph though, we might have to wait a little longer -

The heavy snowfall does pose challenges for the operations crews opening the high alpine. With the current blizzard-like conditions in the alpine, crews have not yet been able to access this area of the mountain. Once crews can get to the alpine, lots of work will begin to prepare the area for skiing and riding which includes: avalanche control, and hazard marking and signage. Whistler Blackcomb appreciates guests’ patience as crews work to safely prepare the terrain before opening.

I just got back in from walking the dog, and these are a couple more pics I took.

Sorry if this is against protocol…. Googling for advice on Snow conditions in Whistler you seem a good source. Not having skied Canada (mainly Alps) I need to choose between Whistler and Banff in April 2010. Can you help ? Where am I going to get the best snow ?

    Thanks
    Den

      Hey Den,

I have never been to Banff in April, but have heard they quite often have decent late season conditions. I know that Whistler normally does. April is more about sun and slush than powder, but still a lot of fun. Also, every April we host the ‘World Ski and Snowboard’ festival, which is a great time.
Check out its website at http://www.wssf.com/
The dates for 2010 are April 16-25. You can also have a look at last years website (for more of an idea of what to expect) by clicking the link at the bottom right of that page.

Cheers Oliver… Have you done Whistler in April (early) ? The idea of slush leaves me cold (ha!) …. Banff seems (from various comments elsewhere) to have better late snow conditions but I take you busses

hey how long is it expected whistler will have snow for?

    • Greg says:

That is a bit of a weird question – Whistler’s winter ski season lasts until May usually, and we have summer skiing in the alpine during July.

As for snow in the village itself, I guess that usually lasts until around the beginning of April. It varies a lot though, as some years we have dust in the village in April, while some we are still getting powder this low.

      Hope that helps.
