Clear Skies and Cooler Weather

November 4th, 2009 at 4:44 pm by Greg · No Comments

The last couple of days have been mainly clear, with only a slight drizzle or two of rain in the valley. Overall the temperatures have dropped a little, which is good, but we still need to get a bit colder before we can start counting snow clouds before they hatch.

The major of weather systems to hit Whistler originate from over the ocean, so as they hit us, they tend to raise the air temperature a few degrees. So while it is basically cold enough to snow right now, as the weather approaches it might not be, so a few degrees colder now, would result in more favorably temps when the systems do hits us. I hope that makes some sense…..

With the temperatures being colder, I have noticed some snowmaking guns operating on Whistler Mountain. I can see guns on ‘Wild Card’ and ‘Ptarmigan’ ski runs – both of which are being used by the Olympics. ‘Wild Card’ is the start of the Womens Downhill (maybe others too), while Ptarmigan is likely being used as a training run, or possibly used for a race like Slalom. Not sure about ‘Ptarmigan’, anyone else know what the deal is? There are also guns operating on ‘Dave Murray Downhill’ and some in the Emerald chair zone. I presume there are some running on Blackcomb too. Normally early season they are on ‘Wishbone’ and ‘Choker’ (where the terrain park is)
Anyway, you can see some of the guns working in the photo below.
