The title says it all, you could find all kinds of conditions on the mountains today. I for one, had a lot of fun and some really good runs.
The top of the mountain was basking in sunshine, while remaining fairly cool. It made for great visibility and an overall fantastic time. I did find 7th Heaven had suffered from a bit of a thaw / freeze cycle from yesterday / overnight. This resulted in less than ideal snow – a little hard and chunky in places – but still great skiing.
The best snow was in the Horstman glacier (surprise surprise – Horstman has the best snow almost everyday). Just be careful skiing ‘Prime Rib’ as it had a natural slide, and although patrol used explosives, they couldn’t get the rest to go – it will go, it’s just a question of when. Photos above and below are of the slide on Prime Rib.
I did some runs in the Crystal zone, and it was snowing the whole time. It was stuck inside a fog layer, which was cold enough to turn the moisture into snow. While not quite ‘powder’ runs, it was pretty good. The only problem was the visibility was a bit on and off.
The mid mountain had suffered the thaw / freeze pretty bad and was not good skiing (compared to the rest of the mountain). The lower part was really slushy and more like spring skiing – which I like, so it was fun too.
I also managed to ride the Peak 2 Peak on my own today, kinda weird being in such a big gondola by yourself. At lastly, but far from least – the lift lines were no where to be seen, only 7th Heaven had a wait time, but it was hardly worth worrying about.
I made a comment on yesterdays post regarding the whole ‘freezing levels rising yet temperatures staying cold’ (or colder than people think they should).
To finish, here is a little video from the top of 7th Heaven looking back towards Black Tusk and Whistler.
P.S. Don’t forget – if you find my reports ‘handy’ I really appreciate the odd Paypal Donation (top left of page). Makes the time I put into this blog more rewarding ![]()
Thanks !

You left your light saber turned on during the video.
My snowbook (facebook snow diary) is almost identical to your report today in regard to the multitude of conditions on the hill lol. It was weird riding through different weather climates within minutes of each other.
I just got back from a week in Whistler and can say wow! I had a blast! Weather and snow were great and I would like to thank you for all your information. Thank you!
Fantastic site for keeping me updated in preparation for my trip out there on the 24th. It was 30C at midnight here in Aus last night so whether it’s 3c or -3c it’s all good as far as I’m concerned.
No worrying about the snow conditions from my end because:
1. I won’t be working and
2. Those that I work with will still be jealous
If that’s the least I get from my trip I’ll be happy.
Do you ever work or are you too busy skiing the runs just so you can tease us on this blog?
I’m surprised Horstman is open if it is sliding like that. Since you mentioned that you skied Couloir Extreme, does that mean that Jersey Cream Bowl is open? Arriving the first week of February, I don’t expect Peak/Symphony to be open, but it would be nice if some of the other bowls are.
Hey Scott, it was kinda weird being able to ski totally different conditions around the mountain – was cool.
Tim, glad to hear you had a good time here, and that you found my site useful.
James, I like you attitude, any day on the mountain is better than a day at work. Unfortunately I don’t get to ski every day, and on those days (like today) I will either not make a post, or rely on friends to tell me what the conditions were like.
Phil, yes Jersey Cream Bowl is open, including Chainsaw Ridge (which I haven’t ventures along yet). It wasn’t great skiing, but at least it is steep. You can still find some steepish lines around Horstman glacier too.
What is going on with the Whistler Weather. Every report I look at tells me something completely different and these change dramatically everyday. Arriving Sunday anyone got a clues as to whats happening next week?????????????????????????????????
Welcome to Whistler weather – it can be drastically different from day to day, and most of the ‘forecasts’ are not worth much – except for a general ‘what could be’
Next week is going to be sunny !! Basically it is spring skiing in January. It is actually fun right now, but not what we want for this time of year.
